Welcome

Halifax, the administrative centre of the Metropolitan Borough of Calderdale, West Yorkshire, England, has a long and rich history. The Halifax Antiquarian Society exists to research, preserve and record this, taking the ancient Parish of Halifax as its area of study. This sizeable area stretched 15 miles to the Lancashire border and had boundaries which coincide with those of modern Calderdale in all but a few areas. Other towns included in the 'territory' are Brighouse, Elland, Sowerby Bridge, Hebden Bridge, Todmorden and most of Queensbury (the latter now in Bradford) click here for a map of the area. The Society has a membership of over 300 (including several overseas) and continues to develop interest in the study of local history through its varied programme of activities, its library and its publications.
